As a hospital that strives to provide a comprehensive range of family-centred care to the community, Strathroy Middlesex General relies on dedicated medical professionals who embrace and understand the need for high quality and compassionate care of patients.

In recognition of this, grateful patients, donors and the SMGH Foundation honoured medical professionals in celebration of Doctors’ Day on March 30, 2011.

“We are grateful to all of the physicians, nurses and hospital staff who share such a high level of commitment in caring for patients,” said Susan McLean, CEO of SMGH Foundation.

“Their tireless dedication to the practice of medicine and caring for people does not go unnoticed, and it makes us proud to work with all our donors in the community who financially contribute to support physician’s work by funding new hospital equipment.”

This is the first time the day has been celebrated at SMGH. Many responded to the appeal with a note and contribution to support the hospital. It's never too late to honour a physician, contributions to the grateful patient program are always welcome.

Over the next few weeks the Foundation will be counting all donations as mailed response continues to arrive daily. Cards range from very general appreciation for staff, to detailed letters sharing positive care experiences and outcomes.

One grateful patient, Betty VanderWal of Ilderton, shared her thanks to Dr. Vaishnav Rajgopal. She sent a brief note and donation for surgery following an accident that required her to undergo a partial hip replacement.

“I just wanted him to know that I appreciate his kind manner. He answered all my questions and I think he is an absolutely excellent surgeon, all of the staff at SMGH that I dealt with were professional and assisted me through my diagnosis and surgery,” said VanderWal.

The Foundation received an outpouring of response from the community, including some of the following comments:

“Thank you to all physicians and caregivers who give of their time, to care for all of us.”

“You are #1 in our books!”

“We are so very fortunate to have such excellent medical care from the doctors at Strathroy Hospital.”

Donations support the purchase of anesthesia equipment needed for the hospital operating rooms. New technology and equipment improves access to care and wait times. It also helps to attract new physicians.

“We are so grateful to all donors who have responded to thank a physician or caregiver,” said McLean. “We are truly humbled by the show of support to sustain our vibrant community Hospital, thank you.”

Thanks to Seasons Retirement of Strathroy for sponsoring the day. The Foundation looks forward to celebrating Doctors' Day again in 2012.
