The Strathroy Middlesex Hospital Auxiliary: Over A Century of Compassion and Commitment

A Humble Beginning with Profound Impact

Established in 1914, the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Auxiliary has been a beacon of community healthcare support in the Strathroy region for over a century. Their legacy began with heartfelt gestures, like children donating soap bars during the annual Hospital Day campaign. Launched in 1921, this tradition wasn't just an event but a reflection of the community's support for its local hospital. While soap brands like Lux, Ivory, and Palmolive changed over time, the core sentiment of collective effort to cater to the hospital's needs remained unchanged.

Beyond these symbolic soap drives, the Auxiliary's contributions have been diverse and impactful. They've channelled donations ranging from essential items like glasses and towels to specialized equipment, such as the Stryker bed for patients with severe injuries. These contributions, both significant and modest, have been pivotal in elevating patient care and fostering the hospital's growth.

The Legacy Continues

The Auxiliary's dedication to the hospital is evident in their community healthcare fundraising efforts. They've consistently mobilized the Strathroy community to back healthcare initiatives, becoming a symbol of community service. As traditions like the soap drive receded, the Auxiliary's mission adapted to the evolving needs of the community and the shifting healthcare landscape. With the advent of government healthcare and changes in medical best practices, the Auxiliary has innovatively revised its activities. Yet, their core mission—championing the hospital and ensuring top-tier care for the community—stands firm.

In 2009, the SMGH Auxiliary made a landmark pledge: raising $1 million for the Hospital Foundation over a decade. Today, their healthcare support continues through various fundraising endeavours, such as managing the Java Hut Coffee Kiosk, the Hospital Gift Shop, as well as orchestrating events throughout the year.

“We are so lucky to have such an amazing hospital right here in our community. I was born at the hospital across the street, had both my tonsils taken out and my broken leg fixed and now my grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been cared for at this Hospital. It Is so important that our community continues to support the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Foundation (SMGHF) so that they can purchase much needed equipment to ensure the best health care for future generations.”
-Pam Hillis, Past President of SMGH Auxiliary

The Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Auxiliary's endeavours have left a lasting imprint on Strathroy's healthcare scene. Reflecting on their illustrious history, the importance of community involvement in shaping a vibrant, healthier future becomes evident. None of this would be possible without the commitment of volunteers who are dedicated to advancing local healthcare in their community.
